A Joyful Afternoon at Perak Parkinson’s Awareness Day

By Anne Das

The spirit of community lit up the hall at Ipoh City & Country Club (ICCC) last Sunday as over 300 guests, including volunteers, supporters, and members of the Perak Parkinson’s Association (PPA) gathered for a meaningful and heartwarming lunch in honour of World Parkinson’s Day.

Led by PPA President Chris Chai, the afternoon offered much more than just food and speeches. It became a space for connection, shared stories, and visible strength in numbers.

“We’re here to support one another,” said Chai in her opening remarks, as she extended heartfelt thanks to the volunteers, committee members and donors who have helped sustain the association through the years.

Representing YB Howard Lee, Ipoh City Councillor Lim Yao Di joined the event and handed over a contribution of RM5,000 in support of the association’s ongoing work, a gesture warmly received by the crowd.

While many associate Parkinson’s with older adults, Chai reminded guests that the disease doesn’t discriminate by age. Young-Onset Parkinson’s Disease (YOPD) affects people as young as 21, and it’s estimated that over 20,000 Malaysians are currently living with Parkinson’s — a number that continues to rise.

The association, which has operated a community centre in Taman Mirindy, Ipoh for over 13 years, offers a consistent routine and much-needed support. Five mornings a week, members join in for seated exercise, yoga, karaoke sessions, and physiotherapy — activities that build both physical strength and social connection.

This joy was palpable when a group of PPA members took to the stage, performing a cheerful number to the popular APT pop song, which was later followed by a yoga session, as well as a presentation by Dr. Ng Swee Fong, who showed how “Math Therapy” could light up the spirits of its participants.

“In all my years of teaching, I never thought that Math could be used for therapy,” a touched Dr. Ng said.

As the music played, the hall filled with applause, swaying hands, and supportive cheers. It was a proud and touching moment that captured the essence of the day.

The excitement continued with a spirited lucky draw, featuring a stunning array of prizes — from appliances and gadgets to personal care items — all generously donated. The festive energy, laughter, and shared stories turned the lunch into something truly memorable.

In a world that often sidelines those with chronic illness, this afternoon stood as a reminder that community heals. And that joy, when shared, multiplies.
