IPOH: It is crucial to report domestic violence cases immediately to the authorities so that follow-up actions can be taken, including protecting the victims.
Inspector Siti Rabiah Kassim, an Investigating Officer from the Sexual, Women & Children Division at the Perak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK), said this is to prevent more serious incidents from occurring.
She explained that society needs to understand that domestic violence is not only physical but can also involve psychological pressure.
“There is a specific timeline for lodging a report after an incident.
“This helps the police conduct investigations and prevents more severe outcomes.
“Immediate action can also prevent victims from forgetting the details of the incident,” she said during a talk at the IRIS Program: Who Is Protected Under the Domestic Violence Act.
The program was organized by the Perak State Women’s Development Office (JPW) in collaboration with TAJ International College (TIC).
The IRIS Program is one of JPW’s initiatives to raise public awareness, particularly among women, by empowering them with legal literacy and knowledge of their rights.
It specifically addresses issues and problems related to violence against women, such as the growing number of domestic violence cases today.
The program also provides deeper understanding and exposure regarding the rights of domestic violence victims under existing legal provisions.
Earlier, the program, attended by 200 participants including civil servants, NGOs, students, and the public, was officiated by JPW Director-General Hanani Sapi.
Also present was TIC Executive Chairperson Tina Tajuddin, who is also the 2024/2025 Perak State Women’s ICON Award winner.
