Update: Gerbang Malam roof to be completed by May, MBI addresses design flaws

IPOH: The remaining construction of the 171-meter roof at Gerbang Malam is expected to be fully completed by the end of next month.

Ipoh Mayor, Zamakhshari Hanipah, stated that the roofing structure, which began construction on October 14 last year, is currently 85% complete.

He explained that the first phase, involving a 185-meter roof, was completed in April 2023, but the remainder was delayed due to previous funding constraints.

“The Ipoh City Council (MBI) has received an additional RM500,000 allocation for the roofing extension from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT).

“It is expected to be completed by May 30, with the project now 85% completed on-site.

“MBI has also submitted a funding application worth RM4.25 million to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) for the implementation of Phase 3.

“This includes additional roofing structures, the installation of heli fans, and enhancements to pedestrian walkways,” he said on Tuesday.

He was responding to issues raised by Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic regarding traders’ complaints at Gerbang Malam.

Additionally, he acknowledged the problems faced by roofed traders, especially during heavy rain.

“MBI has conducted an immediate site inspection at Gerbang Malam to assess the current condition and ensure that the needs of traders and visitors are considered in future planning.

“The current roof design has taken into account the height so as not to block the adjacent commercial units and shop lots near Gerbang Malam.

“MBI also acknowledges the need to install signage displaying operating hours as requested.

“We are optimistic that approval will be obtained to ensure the project proceeds as planned,” he added.

He said MBI will continue seeking additional funding to complete the entire project for the benefit of traders and the comfort of visitors.

“MBI always prioritizes traders’ welfare, enhances Gerbang Malam’s image as a tourist attraction, and ensures that all developments provide benefits to Ipoh residents,” he said.

Previously, Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic highlighted issues faced by both roofed and unroofed traders at Gerbang Malam.

Among the concerns raised were a trader- and visitor-unfriendly roof design, incomplete roofing, uneven walkways, and lack of public notice signage for parking.
