‘Back to Basics’ Approach Key to Ipoh’s Smart and Sustainable City Vision

By Rosli Mansor Ahmad Razali

IPOH: The “Back to Basics” approach focusing on cleanliness, greenery, and progress is the cornerstone of Ipoh’s vision to become a Smart and Sustainable City, said Ipoh Mayor Datuk Zamakhshari Hanipah.

He said the concept of cleanliness should go beyond just maintaining physical hygiene to include environmental conservation, air pollution control, carbon emission reduction, and eco-friendly development.

Meanwhile, the idea of greenery is expanded to cover four pillars of a Low Carbon City – green buildings, green infrastructure, green environment, and green transportation.

“As for progress, it must move beyond physical development. It should reflect a city that promotes low carbon emissions, efficient urban transport systems, energy-saving urbanisation, and low-carbon communities,” he said in a statement.

Zamakhshari was speaking at the Special Assembly in conjunction with the 37th Ipoh City Day celebration, which saw the participation of over 1,800 Ipoh City Council (MBI) staff.

He also called on MBI personnel to continue working together as a team to uphold the council’s excellence as a leading local authority in Perak and Malaysia.

“Every success achieved by MBI has a significant impact on the Perak State Government, and such achievements would not be possible without the high level of commitment shown by MBI staff,” he said.

In conjunction with the celebration, MBI announced a 70% discount on traffic compound fines from May 26 to 31, 2025, as part of efforts to raise awareness and encourage public participation in the city’s development.
