Explosions, Unusual Tremors from Quarry in Persiaran Chepor Indah Prompt Public to Urge Probe

By: Aida Aziz

IPOH: Residents living near Persiaran Chepor Indah 1 in Chemor claim they have been frequently hearing explosions and experiencing strong ground tremors believed to be linked to quarry activities in the area.

They also allege that the repeated vibrations have resulted in structural damage to several homes, including cracks appearing on walls and ceilings.

According to a residents’ representative, although the issue has previously been raised with the relevant authorities, blasting activities are still reportedly ongoing.

“I have submitted a report to the Land and Mines Office (PTG) regarding the explosions and tremors before, but they said inspections were carried out and no blasting was detected at that time.

“But we know that the quarry operators are conducting blasting on the other side. Last month, there were blasts at around 8am and 2pm, and we could feel the tremors,” he said.

“The issue has been going on for a long time. We have held meetings among residents, but we are not sure who else to complain to. We also brought it up to the Environment Department previously, and were told that the police did not issue permits for blasting,” he added.

It is understood that rock-breaking works at the quarry are carried out for export purposes.

Another resident claimed that while blasting and tremors were less frequent before, they have become more regular in recent weeks, occurring almost weekly.

“I always keep my windows closed because a lot of dust enters the house due to the rock-breaking works here. The blasting noise is usually heard once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

“They operate from 8am to 5pm, and there is no work on Saturdays and Sundays. If possible, the relevant authorities should come down and monitor the situation before it gets worse,” he said.

Meanwhile, another resident who has lived in the area for more than five years urged the Manjoi state assemblyman or relevant authorities to take residents’ concerns seriously.

“Even if it is not the Member of Parliament, we hope the Manjoi assemblyman can come here and investigate whether the works carried out comply with the standards or SOPs set by the authorities or otherwise.

“On one occasion, I was very shocked by the unusually strong tremor felt in this area. It is for public safety, especially for residents here. If it continues, it may affect the structure of homes and endanger lives,” he said.
