RM400,000 for Sultan Yussuf Roundabout Beautification

‘The Jewel of Perak’, a signature fountain structure located at the heart of Ipoh, in Sultan Yussuf Roundabout (a few metres down the road from Weil Hotel), was given a long, overdue upgrade along with a beautification project of the roundabout, which cost RM400,000.

According to the State Executive Councillor for Housing, Local Government and Tourism, Dato’ Nolee Ashilin Mohamed Radzi, the budget was equally contributed by Weil Hotel and Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister’s Department.

“The beautification project involved additions of a new piping system and water pumps, apart from a ‘globe’ resembling a jewel at the top of the fountain structure and LED lights,” she told reporters at Weil Hotel after the relaunch ceremony recently.

Also present were the mayor of Ipoh, Dato’ Rumaizi Baharin, chairman and executive director of Weil Hotel, Dato’ Liew Siew Yee and Liew Yu-Wei.

“Everything was supposed to be completed by March earlier this year, but due to enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO) to contain the spread of COVID-19, the completion was brought to October 20,” Nolee Ashilin added.

“Weil Hotel took part in the project as part of its CSR initiative to enrich the hotel’s surroundings and enliven this historical landmark,” Liew mentioned.

The fountain structure was built back in 1963 as a gift by the Perak Turf Club to Ipoh when it was still a town.

The roundabout, where it is placed, connects four main roads that are frequently used by Ipohites, which are Jalan Raja Nazrin Shah, Jalan Raja Dihilir, Jalan Sultan Iskandar and Jalan Sultan Idris Shah.
