Compounds for Not Wearing Masks if COVID-19 Cases Rise Sharply

The Ministry of Health (MOH) says that if the number of COVID-19 infection cases increases sharply, it will consider imposing compounds on people who do not wear face masks in enclosed areas, as previously directed.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar said the MOH did not rule out the possibility of re-enforcing the regulation in accordance with the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342).

He said that since April 17, the MOH has not issued compound notices in line with the transition into the endemic phase.

“The wearing of face masks, especially in enclosed areas is still mandatory, but enforcement has been quite loose.

“This is because there is no more delegation of power to the police and army to give out compounds on those who do not wear face masks; only the MOH enforces it,” he said.
