IPOH: Malaysia’s election as President of UN-Habitat for the 2025–2029 term is seen as a significant recognition of the country’s commitment and leadership in sustainable urbanisation at the global level.
The country was officially elected last Friday as President of UN-Habitat for the 2025–2027 term, while the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will assume the role for 2027–2029.

This election was unanimously approved by all 193 member states during the UN-Habitat Assembly held in Nairobi, Kenya.
Malaysia, represented by Minister of Housing and Local Government Nga Kor Ming, will share the presidency with the UAE to represent the Asia-Pacific region.
Malaysia and the UAE were also elected to serve on the Executive Board for two years on a rotational basis, along with 36 other countries that were also elected to the board.
The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) announced Malaysia’s appointment as President of UN-Habitat for the period through its official Facebook page.
Nga underscored Malaysia’s commitment to supporting the UN-Habitat Agenda and called on member states to strengthen efforts towards the New Urban Agenda, describing the appointment as a historic achievement.
The appointment also marks a true milestone, reflecting the world’s trust in Malaysia’s capability and vision.
It not only elevates Malaysia’s profile on the international stage but also opens a significant opportunity for the country to showcase local approaches and innovations in inclusive and sustainable urban development.
UN-Habitat is short for the United Nations Human Settlements Programme.
It is a UN agency mandated to promote socially and environmentally sustainable cities and towns.
Its primary goal is to ensure adequate shelter for all people around the world.
