IPOH: Although August—Malaysia’s month of independence—is already halfway through, many business premises in the city have yet to hoist the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang.

A survey of several locations, including the Greentown Business Centre and Medan Istana, found that while some have put up the Malaysian flag, the overall atmosphere remains subdued.

Most of the patriotic displays are limited to government buildings such as the Ipoh City Council (MBI) and the State Secretary’s Office (SUK), which are brightly adorned with flags.

In contrast, areas like Gugusan Manjoi are already vibrant, with flags waving prominently at entryways and throughout several neighbourhoods.

Meanwhile, business owners are urged not to use tattered or worn-out versions of the Jalur Gemilang, as some premises were found displaying faded or torn flags simply for the sake of appearance.

As the end of August approaches, it is hoped that more businesses and homes will take the initiative to display the national flag as a gesture of patriotism and love for the country.
