Bangsawan Beting Beras Basah – Blending Tradition and Modernity, A First in Perak

By: Rosli Mansor Ahmad Razali

Ipoh – The Royal Bangsawan theatre production Beting Beras Basah (BBB) debuts in Perak this September, reimagining the classic art form with modern flair while honouring its traditional roots.

The historic legend, deeply rooted in Perak’s cultural identity, will be staged for the first time at the JKKN Perak Auditorium on September 26, 27, and 28, 2025.

Director and scriptwriter Anne Zahurin described the production as both a performance and an effort to safeguard the state’s history and heritage for future generations.

“The legend of Beting Beras Basah is our cultural root. Through this bangsawan stage, I want the public, especially the younger generation, to feel its spirit and heritage,” she said.

Anne explained that both scriptwriting and direction required in-depth research to ensure that the historical elements were accurately and thoughtfully presented.

“We want audiences not only to be entertained by the acting and stagecraft, but also to understand the message that Perak was built on a history rich with values and lessons,” said Anne, who also portrays the role of Queen Mother Roro Kidul.

As a veteran of bangsawan theatre with over three decades of experience, Anne emphasised that the integration of modern elements was done with care to maintain its traditional integrity.

“Core features of bangsawan, such as the extra turn, jala, and Tarik Nasib songs, remain intact. At the same time, modern approaches are introduced to ensure younger audiences are not just spectators but are inspired to inherit and continue this legacy,” she added.

Dedication of the Lead Actor

Lead actor Reza Hasbi from Kuala Kangsar takes on the pivotal role of Sultan Muzaffar Shah.

For Reza, the opportunity was both a challenge and an honour as a Perak-born actor.

“To embody Sultan Muzaffar Shah, I studied academic texts and consulted with the director on how best to reflect the charisma of a Sultan, including his manner of speech.

This is my first bangsawan theatre performance, so adjusting to the royal court language was quite challenging,” he said.

Reza added that his identity as a true son of Perak gave him an even deeper connection to the role.

“As a Perak native, my heart is very close to this character. Every line and gesture I deliver is from the heart, not just acting,” he said.

Keeping Heritage Alive

Today, the legend of Beting Beras Basah continues to be retold, not only among the people of Perak but also through performing arts, cultural festivals, and creative works.

More than just a myth, it stands as a collective heritage, a symbol of sovereignty and proof of identity that has been preserved across generations.

Adding excitement, the September 27, 2025, performance will also feature a special appearance by bangsawan performers from Riau, Indonesia, as part of the International Nusantara Bangsawan Showcase.

The production, lasting over 1 hour and 45 minutes, will involve 35 actors and nearly 70 crew members.

Ticket prices are set at RM35, with discounts for students: RM20 for higher education students and RM15 for secondary and primary school students. Tickets are available online via the official Facebook page of Pertubuhan Bangsawan Warisan Moraza.

Following its Ipoh debut, the production will also be staged at the JKKN Melaka Auditorium on November 10 and 11, 2025, with the same ticket pricing.
