MANJUNG: Illegal Bitcoin mining activities involving electricity theft have reached a worrying level.

The Manjung District has recorded a total of 1,839 cases, including 130 active cases as of now.

The issue was the main focus of a meeting with the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) Seri Manjung Customer Care Unit, which brought together local leaders and relevant authorities.

The meeting was also attended by the Member of Parliament for Beruas and four state assembly representatives from Pangkor, Pasir Panjang, Astaka, and Pantai Remis, as well as representatives from the Manjung Municipal Council.

Pangkor assemblywoman Norhaslinda Zakaria said the rising cases of electricity theft for illegal Bitcoin mining not only cause huge losses to Tenaga Nasional Berhad, but also have a direct impact on the public.

“Beyond utility losses, these activities also pose fire risks, cause power supply disruptions, and affect the safety of local residents,” she said.

According to her, current data shows that Selangor, Perak, and Kedah are among the states with the highest number of cases, with Perak topping the list.

“This situation requires immediate and coordinated action, including more aggressive enforcement to curb these activities from spreading further,” she added.

During the meeting, various measures were discussed, including strengthening enforcement operations, monitoring, and inter-agency cooperation.

This is to ensure that illegal activities can be comprehensively addressed.

Norhaslinda also stressed that public cooperation is crucial in helping authorities detect such activities.

“The public is urged to come forward and provide information if they notice any suspicious premises or unusual electricity usage,” she said.

She added that successfully curbing these activities would not only reduce national losses but also help ensure the safety and well-being of the community remains protected.
