The Perak Parkinson’s Association (PPA) held their annual luncheon last Sunday, in conjunction with April being Parkinson’s Awareness Month.
At over 350 guests, volunteers, supporters and members of the PPA, the increase in numbers over the previous year’s 300 attendees, showcases the growth of PPA in raising awareness and providing support for those with Parkinson’s, but also highlights the seriousness of the affliction.
Once again, the PPA members astound with their annual seated dance performance as well as a yoga presentation.

In addition to performances by Parkinson’s Disease patients showing off their exercise routines, there was also a presentation by speech therapist Ms Diong Zhi Zhi, who spoke on the challenges of communication and swallowing in individuals with Parkinson’s.
“The aim of Parkinson’s Awareness Day is to enhance public understanding of Parkinson’s disease and to expedite the search for effective treatments. Our union serves as a platform where patients can engage in exercise, share experiences, and provide mutual support from 9 am to 1 pm, Monday through Friday. Our center is situated in Taman Mirindi, Ipoh. The association was established in 2012 and has been functioning for 14 years.”, stated Chris Chai, president of the PPA.
“Today’s event is not just a gathering, it is a meaningful effort to raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease, a condition that affects not only individuals but also their families and communities. Through this event, we hope to increase understanding, promote early detection, and encourage compassion towards those living with Parkinson’s.”
“Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that impacts movement, but beyond the physical challenges, it also brings emotional and social difficulties. That is why awareness, education, and community support are so important.”

The guest of honour for this event was YB Jenny Choy Tsi Jen, Deputy Speaker of the Perak State Legislative Assembly and ADUN Canning, and Kampung Simee Village Head, Mr. Galen Chin. YB Jenny also presented a mock cheque of RM5,000 to PPA, jointly contributed by the offices of the MP for Ipoh Timor and DUN Canning, highlighting their continued support.
