IPOH: Another treasure of Perak’s heritage has been documented as a reference for future generations.
The book “Nobat Diraja Perak: Muzik, Fungsi dan Simbolisme”, jointly published by Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) and People of Remarkable Talents (PORT), aims to elevate and preserve cultural heritage.
The Raja DiHilir of Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzurkarnain Sultan Idris Shah, graced the launch ceremony held at the Royal Perak Golf Club.

The publication carries deep significance, reflecting the traditions and grandeur of the Perak Sultanate.
Authored by Raja Iskandar Raja Halid, the 260-page book provides a scholarly and detailed exploration of Malay court arts.
Through an ethnomusicological approach, the work not only elaborates on the structure of nobat music including tempo, melody and rhythm, but also explains the specific functions of each repertoire within royal ceremonies such as coronations and official events.

UMK vice-chancellor Wan Ahmad Amir Zal Wan Ismail, in his speech, described the book as a valuable record of cultural heritage that could expand knowledge and serve as an important document for future reference.
He noted that the uniqueness of the Perak Sultanate lies in its rich customs and traditions that have been carefully preserved.
“Among them is the nobat, a royal regalia instrument that not only functions as court music but also symbolises sovereignty and the legitimacy of rule.
“The sound of the nobat carries profound meaning, reflecting the continuity of tradition and the majesty of the royal institution,” he said.
A total of 1,000 copies have been printed for the first edition and are priced at RM38.
