BANGUN!!!: Time for art teachers to be recognised as artists

IPOH: Perak Visual Arts Education (PSV) teachers have been urged to continue creating and showcasing their creative ideas through BANGUN!!!: Perak Visual Arts Education Teachers Exhibition 2026.
The exhibition, which brings together works by PSV teachers from diverse backgrounds, artistic approaches and creative inclinations, is being held from Sept 1 to 15, 2026 at The Silver LAB, Ipoh, Perak.
Featuring 44 works by 31 primary and secondary school PSV teachers from across Perak, the exhibition is not merely a showcase of educators’ creativity but also serves as a call for them to be recognised once again as artists within the state’s art ecosystem.
Yayasan Perak Management Board member YB Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir said the exhibition was not merely about displaying artworks, but also reflected the teachers’ intellectual engagement, aesthetic sensitivity and commitment to enriching education through the language of art.
“Teachers who create artworks not only enrich their own experience as artists, but can also inspire the younger generation to explore, create and appreciate art and culture.
“In line with this, Yayasan Perak views art and creativity as important elements in shaping a knowledgeable, cultured and competitive society.
“Therefore, efforts to strengthen the state’s art ecosystem through the involvement of educators should be given continued attention and support so that artistic talent and potential in Perak can continue to flourish,” he said.
BANGUN!!! Exhibition director Amrie Zakaria said each work presented at the exhibition reflected the teachers’ experiences, observations and interpretations of the world around them.
“Each work has its own story and visual language, providing the public with an opportunity to see Perak from various perspectives,” he said.
He said such efforts were important in strengthening the state’s art ecosystem, as giving educators the space to create and engage with the public not only elevated their standing as artists but also broadened appreciation of art among the community.
The BANGUN!!! exhibition is also expected to encourage a culture of artistic creation among teachers while fostering stronger networks between educators, artists, art institutions and the community.
It provides PSV teachers with a platform to explore ideas, express their thoughts and share their creative perspectives through art, while demonstrating that the demands of educating future generations have not extinguished their creative spirit.
The artworks on display feature various approaches and mediums, including acrylic paintings, sculptures, mixed media, oil paintings and watercolours. Visitors can also purchase the artworks at prices set by the respective artists.
