Ipoh, a city beloved for its heritage and culinary delights, is gearing up for yet another extraordinary artistic collaboration set to enrich its cultural landscape. “Art in the Heart,” running from September 29th to October 8th, 2023, at 22 Hale Street, promises an engaging experience that will kindle your passion for art and inspire your own creative spirit.

This unique event is the result of a notable partnership between three creative forces rooted in Ipoh. Mr. Andrew Chen, an Ipoh native with a background in organising international events and working with many international tourism boards, brings his global perspective to shine a spotlight on the remarkable talent within our own community. According to Andrew Chen, the organiser of the event, “This exhibition is a celebration of our local artistic talent, a journey that connects our community through creativity.”

The event also showcases the artistic journey of Mr. Michael Lip, an artist who reignited his passion for art at the age of 70. Michael Lip, a proud alumnus of St. Michael’s Institution in Ipoh, has been a lifelong enthusiast of the arts. During his school years, he actively engaged in creative activities, ranging from drawing, painting, and fashion illustration to poetry.

Article in Suara Malaysia, June 10, 1966. It said “Her Majesty the Raja Permaisuri Agong  declared the 3rd annual exhibition by Malaysian artists. Picture shows Her Majesty looking at an oil painting entitled “ Marigolds” by Enche Joseph Lip Lokt Cheong. Onlooking is Enche Kington Loo, Chairman of the Arts Council.”

Michael’s preferred style leans toward Realism with a hint of Impressionism, primarily using watercolours and acrylics. His art is greatly influenced by his background in architecture and landscape. Notably, one of his mixed media paintings was exhibited in the National Art Gallery, KL ( Arts Council) in 1965.

Best Friends Forever – Michael Lip

Michael Lip explains his inspiration, “I find motivation and inspiration in all of God’s creations. Additionally, my artistic drive has been fuelled by the stories of elderly friends who embarked on their painting journeys in their later years. Interacting with a diverse community of artists, both young and elderly, each with their unique styles, has further enriched my creative process. And, of course, there’s immense satisfaction in knowing that someone appreciates my work enough to purchase it.”

Adding to this creative synergy is Ms. T Artroom, founded in 2016 by Ms. Won Chin Tong, an accomplished artist and educator. She has passionately imparted her knowledge since winning many competitions and completing her BA (Hons) in Graphic Design in Nottingham in 2013. Her studio has become a nurturing ground for budding artists in Ipoh, offering art classes for various age groups.

Ms. T Artroom’s participation in this event is a moment of pride as it provides a platform for her 14 talented students to showcase their creativity. Ms. Won expresses her excitement, “Our students have poured their hearts into these artworks, some even took 6 months to perfect. Being part of this creative endeavour is proof of their dedication and growth.”

The students at Ms. T Artroom explore various themes and techniques, showcasing their versatility and creativity. Their artworks, displayed alongside celebrated artists, reflect the studio’s commitment to nurturing talent and dreams.
