Repair of KTM Ipoh Station roof to be completed this May, no more leaky ceilings or wet floors – RAC

By Aida Aziz

IPOH: The repair works on the roof of the Ipoh KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) Station, which previously faced issues with leaking ceilings, are expected to be fully completed by mid-May.

According to a statement issued by the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC), this will resolve the ceiling leakage issues in the station’s lower areas, including the waiting area.

“The roof repair works began on March 14, involving the dismantling of old and damaged roof structures.

“During the installation of waterproofing layers, contractors faced challenges due to unpredictable weather, including heavy rain lasting more than six hours.

“This indirectly affected the repair process,” the statement said, in response to media reports on Monday.

It added that as a mitigation step, informational signboards have been placed at strategic locations, and continuous monitoring is being conducted by RAC representatives and the contractor.

“In response to the issue of dilapidated toilets, RAC has replaced several facilities within the toilet area.

“This includes appointing a cleaning contractor who will carry out cleaning works at least three times a day, especially during train arrivals.

“Leaky ceilings in the toilet area will also be repaired to ensure the public can use the facilities comfortably,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, regarding the limited sales kiosks, which passengers have raised as an issue, RAC stated that it is due to space constraints in the main lobby.

“This station is among those that receive a high number of passengers. Therefore, providing adequate seating, comfortable entry and exit paths for passengers, and safe railway operations are RAC’s priorities.

“However, the situation is expected to improve after the opening of a new concourse area, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of May,” it said.

RAC also confirmed that the Majestic Hotel, located in the heritage station building, will also be refurbished as part of the station restoration project.

This will be carried out comprehensively in phases.

On Monday, the media reported the poor condition of Ipoh KTM Station, highlighting issues such as leaks in several areas, which remain a major concern for visitors and passengers.

Most passengers interviewed claimed that the building still has many shortcomings, including toilet conditions that could create a negative image among outsiders.
