Take electrical pole maintenance seriously to avoid electric shock incidents

By Zaki Salleh

IPOH: The incident of a child being injured by electric shock at a food truck site near the Drawbridge square in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, should serve as a wake-up call for all parties.

The incident occurred last Wednesday at a location known as a popular attraction for visitors.

The Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT) confirmed that the incident was caused by a damaged electrical cable that came into contact with a street lamp pole.

An inspection revealed that the damaged cable touched the lamp post, resulting in the electric shock.

Due to concerns about such incidents, Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic has repeatedly published reports on exposed electrical lamp posts without proper covers.

In addition to public complaints, there have also been reports based on field surveys by Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic journalists.

However, such news reports are not well-received by some quarters, with some even accusing the publication of trying to embarrass certain parties.

Upon closer inspection, it is evident that many electrical installations owned by authorities, especially street lamps, are poorly maintained.

Unfortunately, action is often only taken after an incident has occurred.

In truth, it is not a case of “too little, too late” if the responsible parties ensure regular maintenance of lamp posts and appoint accountable contractors.
