TAIPING: Rats are not only a hygiene nuisance but also pose serious health risks, carrying deadly diseases.

In response to this issue, the 2025 Public Market Rat Eradication Campaign was launched today at the Aulong Public Market.

According to the President of the Taiping Municipal Council (MPT), Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir, the Aulong market was chosen because it is one of the most frequently visited by local residents.

He said rat infestations in markets are not a new issue—they not only cause discomfort and disgust but also damage goods for sale and pose a public health threat.

“These rodents can transmit various dangerous diseases such as leptospirosis, salmonellosis, hantavirus, and plague,” he added.

He explained that the campaign is not just about physical extermination efforts, but also about raising awareness on the importance of consistent and collective cleanliness.

There are 11 public markets under the jurisdiction of MPT, Tupai Public Market, Pokok Assam, Sri Kota, Taman Kaya, Simpang, Trong, Taiping, Kamunti, Aulong, Batu Kurau dan Kamunting

Of these, four markets have been upgraded to enhance comfort for traders and visitors, Taiping, Pokok Assam, Batu Kurau dan Kamunting.

“MPT aims to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure the success of this program,” said Khairul Amir.

“Ultimately, we hope to make MPT-managed public markets rat-free, cleaner, and safer for everyone,” he concluded.
