TAIPING — A string of cable theft cases highlighted by the media in the state have largely stemmed from reports lodged by vigilant members of the public, particularly local communities who are alert to crime prevention efforts.
In the latest incident, a teenager’s report led to the arrest of four men along the Kamunting–Batu Kurau roadside, near the Vocational College here.
Police earlier received a report from the teenager, who spotted a group of men behaving suspiciously while opening a cable hole cover by the roadside early Friday morning.
The men were apprehended while they were still engrossed in removing the cable pit cover.
Taiping District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Nasir Ismail said the report was received at around 1.50 am.
“All the suspects were arrested while they were busy opening the cable pit cover.
“They are aged between 38 and 41, and based on preliminary investigations, we believe this group is responsible for the cable theft cases occurring around Kamunting and Taiping,” he said in a statement.
Police also seized several tools used to open cable pit covers, two machetes, two screwdrivers and a Perodua Myvi.
Further investigations are ongoing as police believe the group is also linked to several other cable theft cases across Perak.
