IPOH: The heroic legacy of Malay–Bugis warrior Raja Haji Fisabilillah will be staged in Teater Raja Haji Fisabilillah on Dec 27 and 28, 2025, at 8.45pm at the Perak National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) Auditorium.

Written as a bangsawan script by Hazzley Abu Bakar, the production is directed by Ard Omar, who injects the work with an experimental theatrical approach.
The play centres on Raja Haji’s struggle as Yamtuan Muda of Riau in defending the dignity of the Malay–Bugis people and the sovereignty of the homeland against Dutch colonial forces under the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC or United East India Company).
Set amid intense political and military conflict, the staging highlights his leadership in uniting Malay–Bugis forces to counter Dutch dominance over trade and power in the Straits of Malacca.
Blending traditional bangsawan elements with symbolic visuals and spiritual interpretation, the production offers a contemporary reimagining of historical events.
Raja Haji is depicted as a strategic, courageous and steadfast leader feared by enemies for his unwavering defence of Riau and Melaka.
The narrative follows key battles led by Raja Haji, emphasising Malay–Bugis unity in protecting the dignity of the Nusantara region.
The climax recounts Raja Haji’s martyrdom at Teluk Ketapang, Melaka, in 1784 after a Dutch ambush and betrayal.
His death is portrayed not as defeat but as a symbol of sacred resistance against foreign oppression.
Raja Haji Fisabilillah’s legacy continues to inspire, reflecting values of bravery, loyalty and faith in defending national sovereignty.
Tickets are priced at RM15 and can be booked via WhatsApp at 017-255 8059.
