IPOH: A business premise in Ipoh was raided on Thursday over suspicions of selling counterfeit mobile phones of well-known brands.

Perak Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) director, Datuk Kamalludin Ismail, said the inspection uncovered 529 mobile phones, all suspected of bearing brand trademarks improperly affixed to the items.
“An operation targeting the sale and distribution of counterfeit goods involving branded mobile phones was carried out.
“The raid was conducted following complaints and information from trademark owners who reported the sale of suspected counterfeit branded phones at the premises.
“Representatives from the trademark-owning company conducted preliminary verification of the items, and it is suspected that the premises committed offences under the Trade Marks Act 2019.
“Possessing, controlling, or having custody of any goods bearing a registered trademark, for the purpose of trade or manufacture, that are improperly marked constitutes an offence under Section 100, and this case is suspected to fall under Section 102(1)(c) of the Trade Marks Act 2019,” he said on Friday.

He added that all goods and documents have been seized for further investigation, with the total estimated value of the seizure at RM150,788.
Apart from safeguarding consumer rights, KPDN takes the protection of trademark owners seriously through continuous monitoring and intelligence operations on premises selling branded items to curb the sale of counterfeit goods.
