31,500 Lampam Fry Released into Sungai Perak to Boost Inland Fish Stocks

KUALA KANGSAR – Inland fisheries remain an important source of food supply for both domestic consumption and commercial needs.

With the current uncertain economic climate, ensuring the availability of inland fish resources has become increasingly crucial.

Efforts to strengthen these resources were intensified with the release of 31,500 lampam fry into Sungai Perak at Kampung Periang.

The initiative was carried out under the Fish Fry Release Programme for Public Waters in the Kuala Kangsar District, organised by the Department of Fisheries Malaysia.

Beyond boosting fish stocks, this effort also aims to preserve the long-term sustainability of the river ecosystem.

All the lampam fry were supplied by the Enggor Ornamental Fish Centre (PIH) as part of its technical and logistical support.

The programme was participated in by staff from the Kuala Kangsar District Fisheries Office, members of the myKomuniti Perikanan Kampung Periang, as well as local inland fishermen.

According to the organisers, the release of the fry is expected to help increase fish populations in public waterways.

This, in turn, will provide economic benefits to inland fishing communities and residents who rely on the river for their livelihoods.

“This programme is not only aimed at increasing fish stocks but also at raising public awareness on the importance of preserving river ecosystems,” the organisers said in a statement.

Such initiatives also reflect the Department of Fisheries Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the nation’s fisheries resources.
