IPOH: The long-standing flood problem affecting residents in Gugusan Manjoi was once again brought to the attention of the Perak State Legislative Assembly.
This time, with calls for more comprehensive and effective action from the government.
Manjoi assemblyman Hafez Sabri stressed that the flooding issue has persisted for years without a truly conclusive long-term solution.
He said areas such as Kampung Tanjung Hussin Lama and Kampung Manjoi (Lorong Dato’) have been identified as high-risk zones.
“Beyond geographical factors, overflow from Sungai Pari and Sungai Tapah occurs frequently, especially during heavy rain, leading to flash floods that disrupt residents’ lives.
“When drains are unable to cope with the water flow, they overflow and cause rapid water accumulation, triggering flash floods,” he said while debating the issue at the state assembly sitting.

At the same time, Hafez also raised questions over the implementation of the Sungai Kinta Flood Mitigation Plan Phase 2 project, currently in the planning stage, and whether it takes into account the internal drainage needs of affected villages.
“It is crucial to ensure that large-scale projects like this do not focus solely on rivers, but also include improvements to community-level drainage systems,” he said.
He also highlighted weaknesses in the existing water pump system, which still operates manually and is seen as inefficient in handling flood situations that require swift action.
As such, he proposed upgrading the pump system to high-capacity automated technology capable of operating based on real-time water levels.
Hafez emphasised that a “total solution” approach is needed to address the issue, including upgrading drains, strengthening internal drainage systems and introducing modern, efficient water pump technology.
He also pledged to continue voicing the concerns of residents in his constituency until the flood issue is fully and effectively resolved.
