The state government of Perak highly encourages the use of environmentally friendly (biodegradable) packaging for daily use to reduce plastic waste which is affecting the environment.
Executive Councillor for Health, Science, Environment and Green Technology, Mohd Akmal Kamaruddin said that the initiative is an approach to reduce the use of plastic.
However, he further mentioned that the public’s insensibility towards the problem of conventional plastic usage was also the reason for continuous plastic disposal.
“We’ll instill the significance of using biodegradable products via awareness campaigns and then progressively move toward the path of environmental sustainability.
“Conventional plastics mixed with other rubbish waste can lead to chemical reactions, which in turn lead to soil pollution as well as threaten aquatic lives among others,” he said.
He explained after officiating the Taiping Biodegradable Product Distribution Programme at the Kamunting Morning Market recently.
The eco-friendly trash bags introduced at the programme are made from plants such as fragrant lemongrass, corn and others.
“The decomposition period is between eight months to two years. Meanwhile, conventional plastics can take up to hundreds of years.
“Appropriate action and planning will be taken together with the conventional plastics industry players in Perak,” he said.
