Community Plays Vital Role in Maintaining Local Cleanliness

By Zaki Salleh

IPOH: Residents from three communities, Taman Cherry, Taman Lim and Taman Merdeka, took part in a community clean-up programme held in conjunction with the Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Programme at Taman Cherry.

Organised by the Ipoh City Council (MBI), the programme aimed to strengthen neighbourhood ties while raising awareness of the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

The event also featured a fire-fighting demonstration by the Ipoh Fire and Rescue Station, along with a briefing on the proper use of fire extinguishers.

In addition, residents were given exposure to the management of used cooking oil, electronic waste (e-waste) collection, and social protection initiatives through exhibitions by participating agencies.

MBI also provided a mobile assessment tax payment van to make it easier for residents to settle their assessment tax matters.

Earlier, the programme was attended by Ipoh Mayor, Zamakhshari Hanipah, together with MBI councillors, representatives from government agencies and members of the local community.

The Mayor also presented prizes to the winners of competitions held in conjunction with the programme.

In his welcoming address, MBI Councillor Lawrence R. Palanisamy said that the community clean-up programme was not merely about cleaning the surroundings, but also reflected unity and a shared sense of responsibility towards the neighbourhood.

He also reminded residents to spend at least 10 minutes each week inspecting their homes and surroundings to eliminate potential breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.

Programmes such as this are expected to further strengthen cooperation between MBI and the community in creating a cleaner, safer and more liveable city.
