Illegal Racing: Station 18 Turns Into a Midnight Circuit for ‘Mat Rempit’!

Residents Urge Police and JPJ to Take Immediate Action

IPOH, Oct 27 — More than 200 motorcycles and 10 cars were involved in an illegal street racing incident along Jalan Pasir Puteh, transforming the area into a weekend “festival ground” for ‘mat rempit’ enthusiasts after Klebang and Jelapang.

The dangerous activity reportedly takes place every weekend between 2:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., with the area near McDonald’s Station 18 serving as their “permanent circuit.”

A local resident who contacted Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic described the scene as a “street carnival,” filled with roaring engines and cheering spectators lining both sides of the road, disrupting traffic flow.

“We urge the police and the Perak Road Transport Department (JPJ) to monitor and take immediate action against these illegal races. We can no longer tolerate the noise and danger they cause,” the resident said.

He added that the ‘mat rempit’ group often switches locations to avoid enforcement roadblocks, moving between McDonald’s Klebang, Petronas Jelapang, and McDonald’s Station 18.

“They call the Petronas Jelapang area ‘Labu’. If the police set up roadblocks there, they’ll move to Station 18 or Klebang instead.

“Whenever these races take place, the main road in front of McDonald’s Station 18 becomes congested with vehicles stopping to watch, increasing the risk of accidents,” he added.

Residents are calling for stricter night patrols and firm enforcement under the Road Transport Act to curb this activity before it claims innocent lives.
