IPOH: The issue of rising illegal Bitcoin mining activities in Perak was brought to the forefront at the State Legislative Assembly sitting by Pangkor assemblyman Norhaslinda Zakaria.
She said Perak ranks as the second-highest state in Malaysia for cases related to such activities, with the Manjung district recording the highest number within the state.
Norhaslinda said the operations are now expanding systematically, involving highly skilled syndicates that use residential homes and shop lots as bases.
“Innocent premises owners are forced to bear electricity bill losses ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of ringgit,” she said during the debate session at the Perak State Assembly.
She added that from 2018 to 2026, the illegal activities have resulted in losses amounting to RM686.93 million.
The issue of illegal Bitcoin mining is not merely about electricity theft, but also involves public safety, infrastructure stability and the integrity of the country’s legal system.
“Innocent premises owners are left to bear electricity bills reaching tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of ringgit.
“This serves as a reminder to all property owners to be more cautious when renting out their premises.
“Ensure all dealings are properly documented through complete tenancy agreements.
“In addition, owners are advised to transfer the electricity meter account to the tenant’s name to prevent any misuse,” she stressed.
