Centre for Tropical Seeds

International vegetable propagating company, Enza Zaden, officially opened its Asian R&D facility at Sauk recently.

The research centre for tropical seeds was set up on a 20-hectare land at Kampung Biong with the assistance of the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA).

The Chief Executive Officer of Enza Zaden, Jaap Mazereeuw, said that the company is ready to develop new vegetable varieties that are compatible with the South East Asian market and climate which require terraced irrigated trial fields, greenhouses for breeding activities, phytopathology research and farm support buildings.

The ceremony was officiated by Perak Executive Councillor and Committee Chairman for Rural Development, Agriculture, Plantation, Information and Human Capital Development, Dato’ Saarani Mohamad.

Also present were the Regional Director of Enza Zaden Asia, Pankaj Malik and Chief Executive of NCIA, Datuk Redza Rafiq.

Jaap Mazereeuw said Enza Zaden is a leading independent family business supplying vegetable seeds for the last 80 years.

The company upholds the premise that people, anywhere in the world, should have access to healthy vegetables ranging from lettuces, sweet peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and onions to bitter gourds and hot peppers.

Pankaj Malik said that customers in South East Asia are assured of seeds that will meet the highest international quality standards in terms of germination rate, genetic and physical purity and health.

Enza Zaden’s activities in Southeast Asia, on the whole, are considered as fulfilling the state’s strategy in modernising agriculture and increasing the income of local farmers.
