Individuals begging outside banks must be taken seriously

By Aida Aziz

IPOH: It has become a common sight to see many individuals sitting on the sidewalks in front of banks across the state, begging for money.

Some are in wheelchairs, some are women carrying small children to garner sympathy, and others try different methods.

There are even those who open the bank doors for every customer, hoping for a bit of kindness in the form of money.

A survey at several banks around Ipoh and Kamunting found that these individuals are frequently present outside banks every day, mostly in the afternoons.

Comments from the public on social media also expressed concern, with some alleging that certain individuals in wheelchairs might be taking advantage of their disabled (OKU) status—if indeed they are truly disabled.

Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic observed that some members of the public gave them RM1 notes or more.

This activity not only creates a negative image for the state but also causes discomfort or moral dilemma among members of the public.

Among the identified hotspots for this activity are banks in the Greentown area of Ipoh, as well as banks in Silibin, Jalan Pasir Puteh, and Kamunting (near The Store).

Authorities, including the Social Welfare Department, are urged to investigate whether these individuals genuinely need assistance.

If they do, then a proper solution must be implemented to prevent such begging activities from continuing around bank areas.

Similarly, syndicates that place elderly individuals at night markets and other public spaces in hopes of gaining sympathy and collecting money should also be looked into.

Donation drives claiming to raise funds for mosque construction and similar causes should likewise be investigated beforehand to verify their authenticity and ensure they are not being exploited.
