IPOH, June 18 — Residents across several parts of Ipoh were startled yesterday morning by a loud explosion followed by tremors, with the incident reportedly occurring at around 10.30 am.
Among the areas where the explosion was heard include Chemor, Chepor and Meru.
Ipoh District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said police had received reports from the public regarding the loud noise and subsequent vibrations.
He said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the incident.
“Several response teams were deployed to the affected areas for monitoring and to gather information from the public.
“Checks with the Northern Brigade of the General Operations Force in Ulu Kinta confirmed that no training involving explosives was carried out,” he said in a statement.
Separately, checks with the Perak Land and Mines Office (PTG) confirmed that there were no reported quarry blasting activities before noon.
“We also conducted checks with the Malaysian Meteorological Department, which confirmed that no seismic activity (or earthquake) was recorded in the Ipoh area.
“So far, no reports of injuries or property damage have been received,” Abang Zainal added.
He said further investigations with relevant agencies are ongoing to ensure public safety and well-being.
Members of the public with any information related to the incident are urged to contact the Ipoh District Control Centre (DCC) at 05-254 2222 to assist in the investigation.
They may also approach the nearest police station.
On October 21 last year, a similar incident occurred when a strong tremor followed by a loud boom was reported around 11.06 am in various parts of Ipoh.
To date, the incident remains a mystery as investigations have failed to determine the source of the explosion and tremor.
This is not the first time such an event has occurred, with similar unexplained cases reported in previous years and felt by the public.
